PSRs have been in shadow since the Moon\u2019s creation, and hence are very cold (about 100K, or -173 Celcius). Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/spacetech\/niac\/2019_Phase_I_Phase_II\/Thermal_Mining_of_Ices_on_Cold_Solar_System_Bodies\/&quot;\" target=\"new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> NASA <\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the polar craters have been in shadow since the Moon&#8217;s formation, regions outside the craters are in sunlight approximately 89% of the time (north pole) and 86% of the time (south pole), or 324 and 314 days\/year, respectively (<a href=\"https:\/\/sservi.nasa.gov\/articles\/selene-data-suggests-no-perpetual-sunlight-on-lunar-poles\/\"> Selene Mission <\/a>). Solar panels will work in these regions most of the time, but other solutions need to be found for the portions of the year when the poles are in perpetual night.<\/p>\n<p>We are proposing our design to NASA&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bigidea.nianet.org\/\"> Big Idea Challenge for 2019-2020 <\/a><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4618\" src=\"https:\/\/www.deepspace.ucsb.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/BIG-Idea-Education-Express-Image_3-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If our design is chosen, it may be incorporated into the Artemis Mission to send people back to the Moon in 2024. As this is a <i>competition<\/i>, we will release our design only after our proposal is accepted, and our team is selected to receive funding and move into the final competition phase. Stay tuned, as we expect that our stellar team will be selected!
